>> Enjoying Breakfast at Mandarin Oriental

Banh My Hoa Ma

Saigon is well-known for nightlife but there are days when Saigonese people wake up early. There is nothing better than exploring the city with a cup of iced black coffee in hand. Once your appetite is woken up, it will be exactly the right time to choose Banh Mi Hoa Ma for breakfast. A completely simple dish made up of slices of meat which is normally pork, sautéed onions, an omelet. Slices of cucumber and so on, it is all up to your choice. Sitting in the alley right next to the shop, chewing Banh my, watching the hectic Saigon moving and you can see scooters almost everywhere. Saigon is quite basic but obviously beautiful!

The Lunch Lady

There is apparently such a mushrooming of restaurants in Saigon. However, when it comes to local choices, you should not miss The Lunch Lady of the owner named Nguyen Thi Thanh. The locals here had known about her for years before but it was not until the famous chef and director Anthony Bourdain visited for the “No Reservation” series and gave this restaurant a name “Lunch Lady” which is still remained until now. Lunch lady is situated right in the busy District One where you can easily see flows of people coming here to eat. There is no menu, no ordering since the menu is daily altered, all you need to do is just sitting and devouring whatever they bring to you. It could be a bit strange but It is worth a try indeed.

Bun thit nuong

They said that the best thing often come from the unexpected aspect. Therefore, just around the corner of Le Loi street, there is a particular example where definitely offers us one of the best Bun Thit Nuong ever. Including vermicelli noodles, sliced spring rolls, roasted pork, a bowl of Bun thit nuong costs around just $2. A special thing is that, for ordering, just take a seat on one of the red or blue stools, then finger up the number of orders you want. However, in this usually crowded street restaurant, it could be really hard to find a seat.

Banh My 37 Nguyen Trai

If you seek for a scrumptious afternoon snack, let’s just visit Banh Mi 37 Nguyen Trai. However, this name does not refer to its address since banh mi is sold in a cart that the vender push along a driveway, an alley or a sidewalk which depends on the time of the day. Just one type of Banh Mi is served here but it would be the best type you have ever tried. Grilled sausage, fresh cucumber slices, cilantro, chili covered by a special sauce and then wrapped up in a butcher paper, this kind of food will satisfy soon your stomach.

Banh Cuon Hong Hanh

As Saigon is a dynamic metropolis, there are innumerous specialties here but you should not miss to know Banh Cuon Hong Hanh which will offer you a memorable taste. This restaurant is run by a family in District One where the dishes are relatively classic. However one of the most preferred one is Banh Cuon including steamed rice crepes rolled with pork, pork sausage, white peper and sautéed garlic. While savouring the delicious dish, you can have a look over the busy Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street below from the second-floor balcony. A full-stomached feast will cost you barely $4 in total which is too reasonable for a gourmet.
